How long until my domain works?

What to expect after ordering or transferring a domain, how to read the status in the domain list and what to do if it takes longer.

A new domain is set up automatically after your order. How quickly your website answers under the new address depends on whether the domain is newly registered or transferred from another provider.

Typical times

  • New registration: usually active within a few hours. Because name servers around the world cache domain data, it can take up to 24 to 48 hours until the domain works everywhere and for every visitor.
  • Transfer from another provider: takes longer, because the old provider and the registry have to confirm the move. Count on up to five days for .com, .net, .org, .info or .biz; .de transfers are usually faster. The steps you have to take yourself are described in Transfer a domain to hPage.

Check the status

Open My Package → Domains (admin.hpage.com/app/booking/domains). The Status column shows where your domain stands:

  • Being registered – the registration or transfer is still running.
  • Active – the domain is set up on our side. If your browser still shows the old content or an error, wait for the caches to update.
  • Locked or Unreachable – something needs your attention; the most common cause for .com, .net, .org, .info, .name and .biz domains is a missing owner verification.

If it takes longer

If the domain is still not reachable 48 hours after a new registration, or well after the expected transfer time, contact our support and tell us the domain name. We check the registration directly at the registry.
