Create your first website

From a fresh account to a finished website: choose the subdomain and a design, add pages and the menu, upload images and go public.

This guide walks you through the first website in an hPage account. Each step has a short summary and a link to the detailed article. Everything described here works with the Free package.

1. Create the website

After the sign-up the admin asks you to Choose a domain for your website. Enter the name of your free subdomain (3 to 40 characters) and click Create Website. Your website is then reachable at yourname.hpage.com.

  • You can rename the subdomain later under Settings → Rename Subdomain.
  • An own domain such as example.com is included in the Premium package: see Register your own domain.

2. Choose a design

Open Design → Choose Design. Filter the templates with the Keyword Filter, sort them by Popularity or Date of publication and look at a template with Preview. Click Use this design to apply it. You can switch designs at any time; your pages and design settings stay as they are. Templates marked Premium are available with the Premium package.

Under Design → Design Settings you set the title text or a logo and the fonts. Every design is automatically mobile-friendly, so there is nothing to configure for phones and tablets. Details: Choose a design and Design settings: logo and fonts.

3. Add pages and content

  1. Open Pages → Add Page.
  2. Enter a Name (used internally in the admin), the Title that visitors see and the URL of the page. Tick Place in menu so the page gets a menu entry right away.
  3. Click Edit Page Content. The content editor opens: add text, buttons, images and addons with Add Block, write and format your text, then click Save & Continue or Save & Finish.

Saved pages are visible on your website immediately; there is no separate publish step for pages. The content editor needs a desktop browser. Details: Add a page and Edit pages and add content.

4. Arrange the menu

Under Menu → Manage Menu Elements you change the order of the menu by drag and drop. With Create Menu Element you add a Page Link, a Submenu, a Heading, a Separator or an External Link; existing elements can be moved into a submenu. Page categories in Pages only organise the list in the admin, they are not the menu. Details: Manage the menu.

5. Upload and insert images

Open Files → Upload Files and choose Upload from this Device (drag and drop) or Upload from Dropbox. Images may be up to 7 MB each; a Free website has 300 MB of storage. Then insert the image in a text element with the image button of the editor, or show several images with the Gallery addon. Details: Upload files, Insert images and Image gallery.

6. Make the website publicly accessible

While you build, only you can see the website. Visitors see "The website that you want to request is not published yet." until two requirements are met:

  1. Confirm your e-mail address with the link from the registration e-mail.
  2. Confirm your mobile number with the code we send by text message (Free package only; ordering and paying a Premium package skips this step).

The tile Tasks To Do on Home lists everything that is still open, for example "Select a design for your website.", "Enter a title for your website." or "Create your first page.". When the website tile shows the status "Public", your website is online. Check it with Visit Website in the sidebar.
