Both sound similar but live in different places: a submenu is part of the menu your visitors see, a page category only sorts your pages in the admin area and is never shown on the website.
Submenus: structure the visible menu
Submenus group menu elements on your website, for example "Services" with the pages "Consulting" and "Training" inside.
- Click Menu → Create Menu Element, choose Submenu, enter a Name and a Title and click Save.
- Under Menu → Manage Menu Elements click the folder icon Move Menu Element at a page link (or heading, separator or external link), select the submenu and confirm with Move menu element to submenu. For new elements you can choose the submenu under Place in right away.
- Click the submenu's name to see and sort the elements inside it; Back to main folder returns to the main menu.
Deleting a submenu deletes all menu elements inside it, so move them first. More in manage the menu.
Page categories: organise the page list
Page categories are folders in Pages → Manage Pages. With many pages they keep the list manageable. Your visitors never see them, and they do not change the menu.
- Click Pages → Add Category, enter a Title and click Save.
- Under Pages → Manage Pages click the folder icon Move Page at a page, choose the category and confirm with Move page to category. New pages can be placed directly with the Category field in the page form.
- The Categories filter on the left of the page list shows one category at a time. Under Pages → Manage Categories you can rename a category (Edit Category) or delete it.
